'DALGONA COFFEE' TO 'BANANA BREADS' - Future of these Lockdown trends in 2021
2020 is a year that will probably go down in history textbooks as a time when the world came to a standstill, life came to a screeching halt, and people were locked inside their houses, away from the hustle-bustle of their everyday lives. From spending quality time with their families, and picking up a new skill to the influx of social media trends breaking the internet, the past year taught us about blissful solitude, away from the maddening chaos of the outside world. Let’s not forget binging on our favourite Netflix movies or shows in our snug pajamas and playing board games, likes of chess, snakes, and ladders. Brewing ‘dalgona coffee’ and baking enough ‘banana breads’ to our heart’s content seemed like the sole purpose of every breathing moment in those four walls.
From House parties to Netflix watch parties; the ‘Don’t rush challenge’ to the ‘Brush challenge’, we netizens found innovative way of staying connected virtually, yet physically disconnected with our loved ones throughout the world, keeping the social media abuzz with these viral norms.
A few trends that completely broke Instagram, Twitter, and the entire Social Media ecosystem were undoubtedly the #Dalgonacoffeechallenge and the #Bananabreadchallenge which were replicated by all, young and old, the coffee and cake lovers alike, globally. Each of us may have either given in to it or know of someone who did the same. It definitely was a wondrous way of keeping the spirits and hopes high when we were engulfed by heightened uncertainty and grim news.
Read on to get a more decoded view on these two lauded challenges, which hailed social media as an atelier of fun and frolic.
WHAT WAS ALL THE HYPE AROUND DALGONA COFFEE AND BANANA BREAD?
1. Dalgona Coffee Challenge: A facile recipe, this South Korean delicacy rose in popularity due to its semblance to an eponymous toffee dessert. All it consists of is adding two spoons of instant coffee powder, sugar, and hot water in a bowl, then beating it until you are left with sore arms and a rich, frothy paste (a laborious, frustrating outlet, don’t you think?), with a grand finale of adding cold milk and ice. But they say, beauty is pain, and so it goes for this. Well, so does the delectable beverage, with the drool-worthy pictures. This #Dalgonacoffeechallenge only continued to evolve to include the Matcha and strawberry versions of it, which continues to make a mark still.
2. Banana Bread Challenge: The lockdown brought out people’s creative caps to the foreground. One in every two people tried their hand at this eminent challenge- making banana breads (our mouths are completely watering as we write this). A tiny bit of the #cookingchallenge or the singular #bananabreadchallenge gave us a grandiose way to utilize all those overripe bananas that we would have otherwise discarded. Adding appropriate amounts of wheat flour (for all our diet-conscious readers), yeast, baking soda and baking powder, sugar, cinnamon powder, milk, oil, lemon juice, and chocolate shavings (to add some oomph) in proportion to the bananas gave us a lip-smacking oven-baked dessert. This fad was so well-received that it became synonymous with all things lockdown- it is definitely is the first memory that pops up in our head when we think of our house-bound days. Its version 2.0 was the emergence of sourdough breads.
Are people STILL MAKING ‘DALGONA COFFEE’ in the ‘BACK TO THE NORMALCY’ Days?
Coming back to the present, don’t our lives seem like the ‘One year later’ tag in Bollywood movies that swiftly went by? Now that we’ve pretty much returned to normalcy, we do tend to miss or crave for those forced, but valued times with our families or simply, our ‘me times. In hindsight, this makes us wonder- were these cook-ups a mere fad or a realization to enjoy those surreal and serene moments of life, embracing this tranquil chaos? Who does not love change? The days of ‘Dalgona Coffee’ and ‘Banana Bread’ would rather be remembered in the years to come as synonyms with good times of breaking monotonies and deeply embedded habits.
With our lives picking up, and the regularity of affairs catching pace, we humans are heading towards the pre-quarantine rat race and demanding routines, perhaps even compensating for the lost time. While it is great to hustle and conquer our goals, it is equally important to continually reflect, pause and take a break to keep our productivity levels intact.
Speaking off the efficacy of these trends, they may have left a lasting impression on all us food lovers, but their appearances have reduced on our screens to just occasional pop-ups. With priorities being redefined, we believe that it may be one of those fads, which will come and go from time to time as a legitimate hobby satiating our tummy tales- one of those ‘bringing a big smile to our faces’ quarantine memories.
Though we are absolutely over the lockdown phase and the captivation and immobility that tagged along, not to mention the absolute halt on social interactions and worldly associations, we would still love to whip off that one cup of hot brewing, delectable, DALGONA COFFEE!!
