PRINCE HARRY - MEGHAN MARKLE'S 'Tell it all' interview: feels closer to home
‘All that glitters is not gold’ is a proverb that we’ve all learnt in elementary school. Deception, you lovelies is real, and sometimes, we have not a clue about what goes on behind closed doors. As young girls, most of us grew up reading fairy tales, enticing us to manifest and wait for our real-life Prince Charming to come and sweep us off our feet into a majestic web of grandiosity. But, did you know there were so many “wrong” messages in such fables, which were not discerned for a very long time? Well, that’s another discussion altogether, you lassies!
In the modern-day representation of the Victorian romantic drama, Bridgerton, the makers tried to be inclusive by increasing the status quo of the African American community, aka, the Duke and the Queen. Do you think that the culmination of a holy matrimony between Britain’s Royal or should we say the ex-Royal couple, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may have inspired this?
Speaking about the most controversial couple (for good and bad reasons), their union itself has gone down in history as a revolutionary moment for the British monarchy. It’s not clandestine knowledge that Prince Harry, the second-born son of Prince Charles and the oh-so gracious, late Princess Diana was deeply impacted by his mother’s death, and to date tries to rectify her passing through his actions. Is he touted to be more compassionate, protective, and giving due to his life experiences?
Getting our Freudian caps on, we won’t be wrong to conclude that there is a lot of deeply entrenched resentment towards the ‘firm’, which took away his most favourite person; a stabilizing factor from his life. Surely, if he could go back in time, he may have done things differently. From being called the “spare” or an “extra”, he’s had it tougher than his older brother, Prince William, the heir apparent. In a life-altering turn of events, he could not bear the atrocities his family had begun to face and would continue to, and therefore, found respite in leaving this imperial life behind, and starting afresh.
As for his better half, she is biracial with a Black mother and an estranged White father; is an activist, a feminist, and an outspoken individual who has fought for women empowerment. Forward in her thinking, Meghan has never shied away, but by her own admission, she was “silenced” for the last four years. As mentioned in one of our earlier posts, she is the most prolific victim of intersectional feminism, both at the hands of the media and the monarchy. Out here, we’d like to raise two questions: Is the media abiding by ethical or fair journalistic practices or simply misusing their freedom of speech? Likewise, do age-old royal protocols take precedence in this contemporary era that we have forgotten what family and blood mean. Hey, isn’t blood thicker than water?

Having said that, don’t you guys think that this debacle and the occurrences leading up to it, can give some incredulous content for our prime-time, Ekta Kapoor clad television shows? Well, well! HELLO DRAMA!
As a fellow 90’s kid, you’ve probably grown up on your fair share of Indian television sagas. Lovers coming from stark, financially different backgrounds, upholding varied values and adorning bold make-up and fancy bijouterie ruled the roaster for decades. And, an attribute which came easily was crying at the drop of a hat.
This young couple’s story too follows a similar trajectory. Excluding the dramatic music, and the disbelief or astonishment portrayed by three head turns, we can safely make such a claim. With the society like media relentlessly crusading over the Sussexes’ love story, they delineated Meghan’s mental health by passing racist and demeaning remarks such as being rooted “straight outta Compton”, with claims of her coming from a “gang-scarred neighbourhood” amongst other horrendous rumours. Where is the basic human decency; the sanctity of respecting another soul? What’s wrong with a woman being married before and divorced, or having a flourishing career, which was given up by personal choice? It definitely isn’t easy to make such a great sacrifice. Just like some of our erstwhile regressive shows, this woman had to respect her elders and give it all up! Kate Middleton, too suffered the barking from the media, but did her British nationality and colour spare her of this grave mental trauma? Or is Wills the more adored brother?

Recapitulating the two-hour-long interview with the magnanimous, iron-lady Oprah Winfrey, our hearts did go out to this ‘till death do us apart’ couple. After being disheartened by their family, they too, like a few protagonists, felt compelled to leave their house to start afresh. Strained relationships, often misunderstood, being stripped off their titles and financial backing and status- if this does not scream of a climax, then what does?
The tipping point of this interview was definitely the revelation hinting at racial undertones by an unnamed family member before the birth of Prince Archie, “There were also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he was born”. Did your jaws drop in disgust, like the host herself at that moment? Fuelling anger within a lot of souls, did you feel the heightened angst and exasperation? There goes the development of connect and making you vouch for the character. Hearing that, we were taken down the nostalgic road, where Meghan was probably crying for help. Iridescent eyes, whilst trying to pull back her tears when media personnel lent an empathic touch, she was truly touched.
Harry could clearly see history repeating itself. Just like his beloved mother, Diana Spencer, his wife too, felt consumed by this archaic entangled web and cited suffering from “constant” suicidal thoughts and self-harming tendencies. We definitely felt gutted when she sordidly expressed, “I just didn’t want to be alive anymore”. By the way, she admitted that after telling her husband of her low-life state, they had to attend a royal engagement, and be all chirpy. Drawing comparisons, why is the woman always supposed to repress or hide her true emotions in a public forum? Why is she forced to bottle all her anguish within herself; just to explode later? The atmosphere in that very moment did turn somber and dim.
The silver lining and a feeble, pleasurable moment came when it was announced that the Sussexes’ were expecting a baby girl in a few months. We, however, took the liberty to draw out some comparisons, concerning the next generation of the British Royals. The 2013 Succession to Crown Act that was passed to eliminate sexism with regards to a Princess’ position to claim the throne due to the birth order, which earlier only went to males, may have benefitted the Cambridges’ daughter, the bubbly Princess Charlotte, but going by the rumours, the same wouldn’t apply to Archie and his unborn sister. Does this reek of being unfair? In fact, in another shattering revelation, Harry-Meghan clarified that as opposed to popular belief of them doing away with the titular privileges, their off-springs were actually not eligible for titles.
In another plot twist, Harry had not spoken to his father in months, and there was a “safe distance” between both the brothers. In fact, the couple categorically mentioned that they continued to share an endearing relationship with the Queen, their grandmother, who had always been “wonderful” to Meghan. As any dutiful daughter-in-law, she too dialed the Queen and “checked in” on her grandfather-in-law, who is ailing in the hospital. Being denied security, they have their friends like director Tyler Perry to thank who provided them with shelter. But sticking more to reality, they will never be completely poor because Harry did inherit millions after his mother’s death, while Meghan too has her past earnings to help them find their footing. And, with them signing several streaming and Netflix deals, they’re sure on their way to finding their footing.
“Let down” by the royals, both Harry and Meghan as in any soap have that one solid mother figure supporting them endlessly, aka, Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland. Also, guys, let’s not forget the ex-Duchess revealing that it was her sister-in-law who made her cry over some petty flower girl matter on her wedding day, and not vice-versa, with the latter having apologized already.
Whether it was completely true or a bit exaggerated may always remain up for debate, but the Palace may have further dug their grave with their vague, noncommittal response stating, “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan,” and that these racist accusations will be dealt privately by the family. In another post, Prince William was seen denying any such issues by called themselves, “very much not racist”. A bit stoic isn’t it?
Would you call these double standards? Neither the family, nor the firm wanted to deal with any form of mental health struggles, expecting her to just suck it all in and deal valiantly when the time was ripe, and nor did they react to clarify when Meghan was being blamed of being a bully to her ‘royal staffers’. In an ironic twist of fate, Meghan concluded in a clip, showing snippets of her new quiet life that she has finally found her fairy tale, sans the tiara and the crown!
The former First Lady, Michelle Obama was seen supporting her as a fellow eminent member of the Black community, stating that it “wasn’t a complete surprise”, and she fortuitously prays for the healing of the family. To anoint another major comparison, doesn’t this explosive, tell-all interview remind you of the moment when the Truth comes out to an audience after foul play backfires? However, since this is not a soap opera, we’d like to think that all the concerned individuals are just victims of their varied grey shades only.
Ending on a lighter note, we have to laud Queen Elizabeth for going so strong and remaining active at the age of 93, just like the matriarch in the much-revered 2000s serial, KyukiSaasBhiKabhiBahuThi! Do you guys think she is ready to retire? We would love to know your views on this panned reality!
Till we meet next,
