Designer Duo GAURI AND NAINIKA FALL COLLECTION 2021 slays at the FDCI x LAKME Fashion Week
“Fashion is part of the daily air and it changes all the time, with all the events. You can even see the approaching of a revolution in clothes. You can see and feel everything in clothes.” —Diana Vreeland
True, isn’t it? Aren’t we always inspired by the things happening around us? You may not be aware of it at that particular moment, but hey, a little contemplation hurt nobody, right? As an artist or an inherently creative soul, we thrive and bask in the glory of creating something astounding when ingenuity and inventiveness cross paths.
This magic was clearly at play at the recently concluded Lakme Fashion Week, which was held in collaboration with the prestigious Fashion Design Council of India. Keeping up with the unprecedented times, just like the international runways, this six-day fashion extravaganza went digital; hello virtual reality! Ace designers like Masaba Gupta, Payal Singhal and Manish Malhotra stepped it up a notch, bringing their A game forward, and proved that although the pandemic may have brought life to a screeching halt, it surely hasn’t dampened their fervour or ‘création de mode’. On the contrary, they all embraced this curveball and created something majestic, which is thunderously reflected in all of their collections.
From glamming it up to going easy-breezy, this forum displayed a riot of colours, emotions, and personalities, which wonderfully weaved together, breathing in a new lease of life and energy which keeps the world going. And you dearies! A wardrobe revival won’t stop for anyone. Do you agree? Amidst this boisterous fashion fever, one such label that won our hearts and had us drooling over their creations was the supremely talented sister team, Gauri and Nainika. Stalwarts in their own right, managed to build on their Spring/Summer line and surely, outdid themselves. Stylish, yet classy; flamboyant, yet sartorial; avant-garde, yet minimalistic- they beautifully struck the right amount of balance, regaling us with their aesthetic sensibilities and fusing both ends of the spectrum marvellously.
MY SISTER IS LIKE NO OTHER - Designer Duo Gauri and Nainika
Sophisticated. Stylish. Vivacious. Girl Power. All these adjectives can perhaps, best describe this much ‘in-sync’ brilliant sister duo. Having created a signature style over the seventeen odd years that they have worked in the industry, they sure know how to keep the tongues wagging in awe and keep the buzz afloat. Keeping it easy-breezy and ditsy, these fashionistas definitely know how to have some fun.
In fact, in one of their interviews, Gauri quipped cheerfully, “We play by our brand philosophy, which is to design clothes that are highly feminine, very glamorous, very ladylike, and old-world in their appeal. We like to stick to that and keep growing out of it; evolving and doing different collections, whilst sticking to our core”. To her claim, the other half, Nainika, nonchalantly added, “We love our work and doing it together; that’s what makes it fun and actually, makes us feel like we are simply having a good time. Our vibe is a more minimalistic and understated statement- routing towards luxury wear while celebrating the Strong woman residing in all of us.” Well, well! All we can say is that more power to you two, and thank you for succeeding in serenading us dreamers always.
If you’ve seen their latest gift of labour, how many of you chirpy ladies wanted to get your hands on one of their gowns? Surely, you must have a favourite! A replication of their luminous personalities, if we may dare to say!
FLORAL POWER X 100 – GAURI AND NAINIKA FALL WINTER COLLECTION 2021
When we first lay our eyes on this stupendous collection, we could totally imagine the models strutting around the ramp, transporting us to the lap of Mother Earth, surrounded by flora and fauna, with Cindy Lauper’s record, ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ playing in the background. Quite a vision, isn’t it?
Taking the fashion world by storm, their outfits are definitely to be watched out for. Like their Spring Summer 21 agglomerate, the Fall 21 Collection too, was utterly ravishing, free-spirited, and incredibly feminine. Effortlessly gliding the world on an empowering journey, the perfect locale to don these marvels would be amidst nature. Imagine a beautiful sun-lit space, while this romantic notion sweeps us by- beauty personified!
Connoting the marvellous environment as their genesis, Gauri & Nainika’s current creations are an ‘An Ode to our Mother Garden’. When the pandemic struck, they found solace in their mother’s garden, which led them to this glorifying conception. Witnessing the flowers bloom into saplings, followed by a bud, and finally, a proliferate flower bed; they were reinstated with hope, optimism, and vigour. What goes around, come around, right?
Against a scintillating, gleaming wreath of blossoms, nature-bound colours took the front seat, whilst earthy and sky hues swirled in fashionable harmony. We absolutely loved the stunning combination of the cerulean blue with grey, shades of green looked super stylish with a plethora of other colours. But the colour palette was not the sole dreamy factor, you guys! The use of wispy organza, silky and sheer chiffons exuded an oozing oomph to the exuberant creations. It was a blazing revival of the decadent Victorian era or the more recent 70s coming back to life.
The hype created by their short film, with an orchestrated symphony to add some character fully tickled our refined and exquisite tastes. Reminiscent of a Parisian summer, the garden or meadow-themed breezy outfits are perfect for the season. Totally digging the subtle Emily in Paris vibes! Brimming with delicate, dainty textures, many shirt collars, easy trapeze cuts, and love-struck bows nestled in the décolleté further accentuated the dramatic appeal and charm of the gowns. Just like no label is complete without its signature identifier, similarly, the splendour was brought about by the billowing ruffles, which were angular, big, or small at times. Touché and a youthful move, we must say!
Large rosettes and broad leather belts replete with giant buckles added a flattering illusion to the waist. The deep plunged ‘V’ neckline, flared sleeves and an asymmetrical silhouette gave it a feminine, sensual, and opulent vibe. Overall, the drama was brought out in an understated fashion, unlike the last season. The fascinating origami folds and the sharp-looking corset-style bodice uplifted the entire look.
The women-centric footwear brand Marie Claire ensured that partnering with this powerhouse team, they took their victorious rock-solid steps as they made a comeback in this crazy, adventurous arena.
According to us, while it may be hard to pick a favourite collection, this summer mystique affair filled with playful floral prints definitely takes the trophy home. What an alluring impetus to return to normalcy!
