SAGAN OUTFIT Inspiration Ideas: The GROOM EDITION
“Once in a while, right in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairy tale.”
What happens when two weird souls get together and all the stars in the universe conspire and align together to create something wonderful out of it? Isn’t this what fairy tales are made of? Sometimes, you may need to miss your regular train or cab to get on the unconventional or a different one that is out of the regular (DDLJ vibing much?). Does this sound like a clichéd plot of a romantic comedy?
We’re often hoping for our version of a chick flick, but in reality, love may strike out of the ordinary. The secret lies in making this experience worthwhile and extraordinary. It really is a case of two sides of a coin, isn’t it? And, when your love story, be it a culmination which may have taken place through the arranged or a more organic route, moves on to the next pedestal, you surely want to celebrate this joyous occasion with all your loved ones being there to celebrate YOU.
With destination weddings jumping on to the bandwagon, the wedding craze has reached a whole new level. Irrespective of it being a more intimate, traditional ceremony or a festive gala, the bridal outfits have always been elements that will be remembered for a long time to come- pretty much everyone’s eyes will be on the couple of the hour; fashion police multiplied by hundred! But, we are not complaining. We totally find it aww-dorable when couples colour coordinate their garments and make it a frame-worthy moment.
Gone are the days, when only the coy and blushing brides to be, were the cynosure of all eyes? If you think that still exists, then think again people! We live in the 21st century; an era that is dominated by the ideas of equality and compatibility. Couples today, are more hands-on, taking matters into their own hands, firm and decisive, and that extends to their love lives too. All hail this mentality, right? Your partner will be your go-to person for everything, big or small; your soul mate and companion, then why not be choosy?
Coming back, men too believe in being well-groomed and looking dapper for their big day. Can we just say that we love men who are immaculately dressed- truly, our better halves? As mentioned in the bridal post, the ‘Sagan’ or an engagement that mainly takes place in the presence of close ones, is symbolic of these new beginnings. A token exchanging ceremony consisting of goodies like money, sweets, clothes and jewellery among other things, is the preview of the vows you undertake to love, nourish, support and empower one another through the end of time. Evolving with these times, families today love to celebrate every breathing moment of these festivities.

Hey, we all respect the distinct tastes and individualities, but let’s add some fun. Weren’t we all just drooling over how majestic Anushka-Virat or Deepika-Ranveer looked during their wedding festivities in exotic locales? Read on to get gripped by the latest fashion trends that you grooms can don what is touted as the initiation of your ‘happily ever after.’
But before, we embark upon this stylistic journey with you guys, always remember to go for pastels for a daytime event, and darker, royal colours such as wine, emerald green or a classic black for an evening fiesta.
1. SHERWANI: One of the most popular traditional attires for men, this is a universal and timeless piece that never goes out of vogue. Yes, there are redefinitions galore, but isn’t that the way of life. A classic, clean-cut intricately embroidered full-sleeved sherwani replete with brocade or velvet bliss and layered jewels generally comes to mind, but you’ll be surprised with what all you can find in the market today. While this has a more formal feel to it, you can get a tad bit playful by opting for an unconventional pattern such as a double-layered cowl sherwani, and churidaars. You can exchange the more conventional mojdis or jootis with a pair of sleek and sporty sneakers (totally digging the look).
If you want to bear semblance to royalty, why not emulate Ranveer Singh or Hrithik Roshan (courtesy Jodhaa Akbar) and adorn a beautiful, motif and carved Angarakha sherwaani. Transporting us to the erstwhile emperor-run era, this looks classy, whilst uplifting our cultural ethos. Another choice is to adorn a knee-length sherwani and accentuate the look with pleated dhoti pants. You can traverse any of these looks from a minimalist chic to an edgy, spunk-filled aura. Ace designers like Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Raghavendra Rathore and the more contemporary Kunal Rawal are your go-to fashion gurus. You’ll be a vision to behold in one of their creations.

2. KURTA REDEFINED: As this title suggests, this is your chance to get your fashionista mode on. It’s amazing how a simple kurta can be played around with in such diverse ways so that each style gives us some major #fashionmoments. If you’re confident in your skin just as is, you can totally rock the conventional varied coloured kurta with a churidhar look. But do you feel it’s a bit mainstream? If yes, we have some other options for you. Sophisticated in its attire, a marvel that can make you stand out in the crowd is to simply add a sleeveless Nehru Jacket.
Screaming of a dapper, gentle, yet rugged manhood, this jacket works like magic. You can opt for a contrasting colour, or just go for a printed design such as those filled with floral or checkered embellishments. We love!! Going back to the Mughal era, the concept of rich, embroidered brocade or a raw silk kurta overlaid with a starkly contrasting long jacket with different cuts to it looks stunning. Another sartorial, yet a flamboyant style that we absolutely drool over is Ombre Suits- a trend that has arrested our hearts and gaping in joyful bewilderment. It basically resembles wearing a plain ankle-length kurta, with a longer version of the Bandghala, cut in a triangular fashion to give it its unique silhouette. Refreshing and flattering in all its hues. For this particular piece, we suggest going for a classic black and white combination. If you’re getting tempted to try these outfits on, check out collections by Shantanu & Nikhil, the timeless Anita Dongre, and the eleganté TarunTahiliani.

3. BANDHGALAS AND JODHPURIS: Panache. Princely. Exuberance. These are the adjectives that foray into our fashion-centric minds when we think of these eye-catching, eternal pieces. Over centuries, the bandhgalas and jodhpuri trousers combination has evolved tremendously, to wondrously weave the threads of royalty. If you’re a monochrome fan, then go for a bold or darker shade such as black, maroon, royal blue or grey. The mandarin or the round collar adds some gravitas to the look. As an eponymous ode to chivalry, always adorn a pocket square. It not only exudes volumes of character, but it makes for a great style statement. If you’re a slightly out-of-the-box, experimental groom (hello Ranveer Singh), you can opt for a blingy, or a baroque bandhgala, with complimenting, minimalist jodhpuri pants. Finish the look with chinos or loafers. SS Home and SVA by Sonam and Paras are our favourites in this genre, and they will leave you looking suave and fashion-forward. Fusion wear galore?

4. TUXEDOS AND SUITS: Do you love the concept of black tie and couture gowns? If you are English in that sense, that there are a plethora of choices to choose from. A sleek fitted, well-lapelled tuxedo, bow tie and formal pants never hurt anyone, did it? But, what if we add a twist to it? Go for a striped pantsuit, with a statement-making, pleated, polo-neck inner. And omg, staying true to the Indo-western fervour doing the round, substitute the skinny trousers, for dhoti pants or jodhpuris. ‘De riguer’ or back to the future vibes? If you’re digging the casual chic, athleisure illusion, a colour popping blazer with matching trousers and a classic shirt oozes a lot of oomph, vigour and elan.

Modern meets archetypal, infused with a touch of vintage? Lastly, go for a sequinned, glamorous yet all-time eternal black and white look, with uber-cool glasses and shoes to heat up the barometer. SS Home (double trouble), Sahil Aneja and Gaurav Gupta will spice you for choice soon-to-be groomies?
